The Health issues in the Boston terrier are Hereditary Cataracts both Juvenile and adult type, the Animal health trust have identified the gene that causes the juvenile one, if both the sire & dam are DNA tested clear, then all the litter will be genetically clearSo all breeding stock should be tested prior to mating, all our Boston's are clear of the gene.As of all small breedes they can have patella problems. Another thing that most Brachiocephalic dogs (short muzzled) including pugs and bulldogs can have is Pharyngeal gag reflex or commonly known as (Reverse sneezing) in a regular sneeze the dog pushes air out through the nose: however in a reverse sneeze air is pulled rapidly into the nose, a reverse sneeze episode generally lasts for a few seconds and the dog appears completely normal, it does look and sound freighting but is nothing to worry about. Many Boston's cannot tolerate excessive heat and extremely cold weather, due to the shortened muzzle, so hot and cold weather combined with demanding exercise can bring harm to a Boston terrier. You should always take some shade with you when you know you will be going out together to a sunny place. You must also have a fully fenced in garden with absolutely no possibility of digging under the fence, you should never leave your Boston in the garden unattended for long periods. You cannot have any types of plants such as roses, that have thorns or other kinds of growth that can cause puncture wounds, this is true for any dog: however it is particularly true of the Boston because of the combination of their height and short muzzle and large eye.A sensitive digestive system is also typical of the Boston terrier in the absence of a proper diet: flatulence is associated with the breed.Whelping is often difficult as the pelvis is narrow and the large headed pups are often delivered by caesarean section.Boston's do not require exceptionally large amounts of exercise, but are not lazy and love nothing more then a lovely long walk.In the USA Boston's are put into 3 size groups up to 15lbs,20lbs and no more then 25lbs and they have size classes at the shows, where here in the UK they don't, Boston's can live up to 15 years with an average of around 13 years. Please remember that caring breeders will only breed with dogs that have had their DNA tested for juvenile cataract, you should always ask to see the certificate that will confirm this. Always make sure you see the puppies with their mother. Never pay a deposit without seeing the puppy first. Never buy a puppy that is on medication. We here at Delaws wish you luck wherever you get your puppy from and whether or not you have one of ours are always here to give help and advice 24/7
